What is The Lalu, Sun Moon Lake like?

The Lalu, Sun Moon Lake is on the Hanbi Peninsula at No. 142, Zhongxing Road, Shuishe Village, Yuchi Township, Nantou County. The site began in 1901 as a wooden holiday lodge built by the Japanese, became an official guesthouse from 1923, and after 1949 was a residence of Chiang Kai-shek. The Shining Group (鄉林集團) bought it and spent more than five years and NT$1.86 billion rebuilding it, and it opened in its current form on March 3, 2002.

The building was designed by Australian architect Kerry Hill, who kept the original beams, columns and floor slabs in the rebuild, and the lighting by Nathan Thompson changes through the day. The hotel has three sections: Building A holds the guest rooms; Building B has the spa, gym, sauna and members' club; and Building C has the villas, meeting rooms, library and parking.

There are 96 rooms. Dining includes The Oriental Brasseries (Chinese and Western) on the 7th floor, The Lake View Chinese Restaurant (Cantonese and Shanghainese) and The Japanese Restaurant (Japanese cuisine and teppanyaki), along with The Lobby Bar on the 8th floor and The Tea House by the pool on the 1st floor. In the 2026 MICHELIN Keys selection for Taiwan, The Lalu received One Key.
