At a Glance
HOSHINOYA Guguan is in the Guguan hot spring area of Heping District, Taichung, surrounded by the peaks known as the Seven Heroes of Guguan. Guguan Hot Springs lie within the Xueshan Range and were developed as a public bath in 1927; the hotel's water is a weakly alkaline bicarbonate spring that is gentle on the skin.
There are 49 rooms, nearly all split-level, with the bedroom and the hot spring area on different floors, and each has a semi-open-air bath fed with non-recirculated natural hot spring water. The resort also has public baths, a pool and hydrotherapy massage. At its center is the Water Garden, dotted with gazebos, and the communal space (風之間) is designed to let sunlight and breezes pass through.
Dinner is the Seasonal Kaiseki, which pairs Taiwanese ingredients with Japanese cooking techniques, and breakfast can be Japanese, Taiwanese or Western. The resort also runs activities such as Atayal weaving, mouth harp making and morning stretches. It suits travelers who want to spend a night or two in the mountains and are happy to stay put without going anywhere else.

Highlights
01Private Hot Spring
Nearly all rooms are split-level, with the bedroom and the hot spring area on separate floors and windows on both sides to let the breeze in. Each has a semi-open-air bath fed with non-recirculated natural hot spring water, so after a soak you can head straight upstairs to rest.
In Yue rooms the hot spring area is twice the size of the other room types, with a large sofa to relax on after bathing; Sen rooms have 2 semi-open-air baths in their hot spring area.

02Public Bath
The public baths follow the Japanese tradition of bathing without swimwear. The indoor bath is filled with the scent of hinoki cypress, and the open-air bath winds and curves out toward the forest, borrowing the surrounding woods as its backdrop.
The post-bath rest area looks out onto greenery, and the resort also has a pool and hydrotherapy massage; opening hours for each facility are subject to the hotel's latest notice.
